Swimming not recommended at Mettawas Beach

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has recommended not swimming at one local beach.

On Thursday, the health unit released its weekly water testing results for the region's nine public beaches and has issued a warning for Mettawas Beach in Kingsville due to high E.coli counts.

A beach warning is issued when water tests uncover high bacteria levels that may create health problems for swimmers. A warning, however, is not the same as a beach closing, as access to the sand and the park's amenities is not affected.

Three other beaches, Cedar Island in Kingsville, Holiday in Amherstburg, and Sandpoint in Windsor, reported triple-digit E.coli counts, but those beaches are open for swimming.

The remaining beaches, Belle River, Cedar in Kingsville, Colchester in Essex, Point Pelee North West, and Seacliff in Leamington, tested normal E.coli levels this week.

The week's samples showed no visible blue-green algae at any of the beaches.

The complete weekly report on beach water testing can be found at the health unit's official website.
