Humane Society sheltering animals impacted by Hurricane Ian

People aren't the only ones impacted by Hurricane Ian in Florida last week. Countless animals were too, and the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society is heeding a call for help.

The Category 4 hurricane brought major flooding to parts of Florida, and some animal shelters, packed with dogs and cats, were damaged in the storm.

The humane society has partnered with Bissell Pet Foundation to bring some of those animals to Windsor-Essex.

A Bissell Pet Foundation flight with more than 120 homeless dogs and cats left Florida on Wednesday. It made stops in Virginia, New York, and Ohio to organizations willing to put up the animals. Seven dogs came to the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.

"Shelters are full across the country, but we are grateful for the organizations making room for Florida shelter pets during this difficult time," said Bissell Pet Foundation Founder Cathy Bissell.

The animals transported out of Florida were in shelters before the hurricane hit.

Now that the animals have been transferred, the shelters have room for those brought in after the storm. By keeping those pets in their communities, it is hoped they will be reunited with their families.

The ones that came here will spend two weeks in volunteer foster homes before they go up for adoption.

This isn't the first time the local humane society has taken in pets after a hurricane in the southern U.S. In 2017, it also sheltered dogs from Houston, Texas, in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
