High wind forecast prompt statement from ERCA

The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) has issued a statement with high winds in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday.

A shoreline conditions statement is implemented after the Environment Canada forecast called for high winds for Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Southeasterly winds may include gusts of 70 kilometres per hour.

"The water level in Lake Erie is significantly lower than the recent past record highs, and therefore, the risks of flooding along the shoreline are much lower," said ERCA Watershed Management Services Director James Bryant. "Despite this, strong easterly winds have the potential to raise water levels by 20 to 30 centimetres in the western basin of Lake Erie and the Detroit River."

The biggest impact caused by these winds may be along the eastern shoreline of Leamington between Wheatley Harbour and Point Pelee National Park, plus the eastern shore of Pelee Island.

There is no flood watch expected now, but ERCA will continue to monitor conditions in areas susceptible to flooding and shoreline erosion.

The statement will remain in place through at least Thursday afternoon.
