Downtown Windsor spruced up with Winter Works (PHOTOS)

If you've been to downtown Windsor recently, you may have seen some new artwork on Maiden Lane West.

The Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association (DWBIA) has unveiled three new works of art, created by two Windsor-Essex artists, as part of the first-ever Winter Works.

Winter Works is supported by the DWBIA and by the Ontario government.

"It is an honour and a privilege to host the works of such celebrated artists," said DWBIA Chairman Brian Yeomans in a media release. "They are truly gifts to the community, and I can think of no two better, more talented individuals to help us launch our first Winter Works."

The artists, Billie McLaughlin and Daniel Bombardier, each created a solo work, then teamed up for a third one.

McLaughlin's solo work is called Growth, a 15-foot wooden structure built out of scrapped lumber. Bombardier created Cube A, a tower of what appears to be children's building blocks that pay homage to Windsor, sitting on Astroturf and surrounded by a white picket fence.

Bombardier and McLaughlin collaborated on the third work, Big Idea, which is a transparent cube that is balanced on a toothpick.

McLaughlin is described in her biography as a conceptual artist who "uses sculpture, installation, and performance art to explore the act of ‘play’ as a crucial element to human development and quality of life."

Bombardier is better known by his artist name, DENIAL, a pop mural artist who uses aerosols and stencils in his work.

Winter Works is, according to the DWBIA, intended as a six-week exhibition. For complete information on the artists and Winter Works, visit the DWBIA's official website.
