Public can review Lakeshore's proposed greenhouse development rules

Councillors on Lakeshore's Municipal Council had a look, and now it's the public's turn to review proposed by-law amendments for large-scale greenhouse developments.

The amendments include limiting the location of greenhouses around urban areas, measures to mitigate the smell, light pollution and traffic, and prohibitions on stockpiling waste.

They would also require greenhouse developers to submit a plan to manage waste and recycle water.

Before the municipality even starts accepting applications, it wants a regional stormwater study looking into the impact on watersheds across Lakeshore and a system to monitor stormwater discharge.

"The proposed amendments are the product of a lot of hard work, significant community consultation, and a council dedicated to acting on feedback from citizens," said Mayor Tracey Bailey. "The presentation of these draft by-laws gives us another opportunity to hear from our communities to ensure their concerns have been addressed and negative impacts are minimized."

Residents can take a look for themselves on Lakeshore's website, and the public can have their say at a council meeting next month.

The municipality also welcomes comments, questions, and concerns in writing through the Greenhouse By-laws Feedback Form or delivered to Lakeshore Town Hall on Notre Dame Street in Belle River.
