A massive investment from a major auto supplier will bring more jobs to Windsor.
The Ontario government announced Wednesday morning that Magna International promised a $471-million investment to the province for the expansion of the company's Ontario operations.
That includes 110 jobs added to Magna's Windsor facility, which will get $6-million to expand the production of powered aluminum pickup bed covers.
Premier Doug Ford made the announcement in Brampton, with the province adding $23.6-million through Invest Ontario.
"Together, with our industry partners, we’re putting Ontario back on the map as we build up Ontario’s electric vehicle supply chain from mining to manufacturing," said Ford. "The cars of the future and the batteries that power them will be built right here in Ontario by Ontario workers."
A battery enclosure facility is expected to open in Brampton later this year. Magna will have 560 new jobs there once the factory is up and running.
Magna is also adding jobs to its facilities in Guelph, Belleville, Newmarket, and Penetanguishene for a total of 475 new positions.
"This game-changing investment by Magna will create hundreds of new jobs across the province, while further strengthening Ontario’s end-to-end automotive supply chain," said Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade Minister Vic Fedeli. "We're creating the right conditions for businesses to succeed and continue to work around the clock to attract new investments that build a stronger economy."
The investment is part of Ontario's ten-year Driving Prosperity plan, which will allow for the production of electric vehicles. Currently, Ontario is home to 700 auto parts firms and 500 tool-and-die makers.
