Government launches new program to reduce invasive species in the Great Lakes

The federal government is launching a new program to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.

Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra visited Windsor on Wednesday to announce $12.5 million for the Ballast Water Innovation Program.

Ballast water is used in vessel safety but can also introduce and spread invasive species.

"We're really looking for innovative ideas and research opportunities to help identify new solutions to tackle the risks of invasive species," said Alghabra.

Many ballast water management systems already exist but were developed for warmer salt-water conditions. This program is specifically looking for solutions that will work best in the freshwater of the Great Lakes.

Transport Canada is now accepting applications for research funding from Canadian vessel owners and operators, Canadian Port Authorities, not-for-profit organizations and academia. Applications will be accepted until May 10 and approved projects are expected to start in 2023.
