If your property took a hit from the freezing rain storm, your municipality may be offering a helping hand with a one-time roadside collection for downed tree branches.
Windsor, LaSalle, and Amherstburg are each offering residents a special yard waste collection service over the coming days and weeks. The timeframe is uncertain for each municipality due to the high number of downed branches.
For Windsor residents, a schedule will be released on Monday. On collection day, branches should be placed at the curb in an acceptable yard waste container including paper bags, garbage cans, cardboard boxes, or roll-out carts. Each item must weigh less than 45 lbs.
Branches must also be 3 inches in diameter or smaller, cut to 4 feet in length, and bundled together using something other than wire. Larger branches will be collected by the Forestry Department at a later date.
In Leamington, municipal staff will use a chipper to shred collected wood, so those taking advantage of this service are asked to simply leave branches in a pile. Do not bundle the branches, put them in a yard waste bag, or a container.
Any branches that are too large to bring to the curb will not be collected and will remain the responsibility of the resident.
Finally, for Amherstburg, residents must register by March 10 by calling 519-730-2113 or filling out the online form. Collection will begin on March 2. Branches should be placed in small, manageable roadside piles with an end pointing towards the road.
Branches can also be dropped off at one of the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA) depots, however size restrictions do apply. More details are available on the EWSWA website.
