Unifor National President Lana Payne visited Windsor today to speak to workers at the Windsor Star printing plant and Windsor Salt.
The printing plant produced its last paper locally as PostMedia has decided to move the printing of the Windsor Star to Toronto.
"It's a pretty heartbreaking day for our members at the printing plant," said Payne. "I wanted to be able to express my solidarity with them. I think it's important that you don't just show up for the good news. You need to be there to support our members for the tough times too."
Next, Payne visited workers of Windsor Salt who have been on the picket lines for just over two weeks.
In the last two weeks, there have been no talks between the employer and the union. Payne said they will consider escalating action soon.
"They want to contract out most of the work here and to be able to have total discretion to be able to do that. No union could agree to such a thing, and we're not going to agree to it," said Payne. "We've been calling on the employer to come back to the table, drop the concessions, and bargain a fair collective agreement."
This is the first round of bargaining since Windsor Salt was purchased by Stone Canyon Industries in 2021. The union represents around 250 workers at the facility.
