Hanover lawyer with ties to Windsor wins major award

A lawyer with ties to Windsor is the recipient of a prestigious award from the Ontario Law Society.

Selwyn Hicks' practice is in Hanover, but before he was a lawyer, he worked in the legal department at the Windsor-Essex Children's Aid Society.

He was also a social worker in Windsor-Essex.

The Law Society awarded him the Lincoln Alexander Award, which is named after Canada's first Black Member of Parliament.

He was the first visible minority person to become the Warden of Grey County, a position he held for three terms after his election to Hanover Council in 2006.

As a politician, he was the chair of the Bruce Grey Child and Family Services board and played pivotal roles on the Bruce Grey Poverty Taskforce and the Grey County Affordable Housing Taskforce. He helped develop the Grey County Mental Health and Addictions Task Force.

The Law Society will present five awards in May, including the Law Society Medal.

"The Law Society Awards acknowledge excellence in many forms," said Law Society Treasurer Jacqueline Horvat. "I am so pleased to recognize this outstanding group of legal professionals who serve as excellent role models for their fellow licensees."

Hicks has a long history of volunteering with community groups, including Big Brothers, Big Sisters, the Hanover Chamber of Commerce, and the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee. He continues to volunteer with different organizations.

The Law Society regulates lawyers and paralegals in Ontario.
