Natural disasters may be beyond our control, but how we respond to them is entirely up to us.
That's the message officials are trying to get out during Emergency Preparedness Week. The theme this year is "Be Prepared. Know Your Risks."
"Individual preparedness can make a difference, both during and after a disaster," said Windsor Fire Chief Stephen Laforet. "As a community, let's take the necessary steps to be better prepared for emergencies."
The City of Windsor hopes residents will take the time to prepare for emergencies by talking to their families about what to do and putting together a kit with enough supplies to last at least 72 hours.
Residents can also sign up for alerts in municipalities that offer the service. In Windsor, residents can sign up online. Windsor Fire and Rescue Services' website also has tips to help prepare the public for emergencies.
Signing up for alerts in Leamington is just as easy. That municipality, along with Kingsville, Amherstburg, LaSalle, Tecumseh, and Essex have online portals where residents can register.
