Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame set to induct double cohort

The Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame will introduce ten athletes and seven builders this year, the largest cohort ever.

"Since 2019, this is only our second class to be honoured," said Board Chair Chuck Smith. "In order to keep pace with the large number of new nominees, we are proud to recognize this double cohort class."

The Hall of Fame is also introducing a new award, the Bob Turner Recognition Award highlighting the contributions of a coach or administrator whose career was not measured by championships.

Turner was a long-time coach, teacher, and principal in the Greater Essex County District School Board, and the inaugural winner is Mike Balo, a teacher and coach with the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board.

In this year's athletes' category, the hall will welcome former NHL player Dan Newman, soccer players Stephen Ademolu and Noel Trepanier, boxers Andrew Kooner and Adam Trupish, basketball player Cherie Martin, fastball's Lith Webb, and track athlete Jamie Adjetey-Nelson.

Seven inductees will enter under the builders' category. Boxer and Superintendent of Education with the public school board, Josh Canty, will be inducted, along with hockey's Kirk Bowan, karate's Conroy Copeland, track athlete Denise Hebert, football player Dan Jarosehwich, triathlete Barrie Shepley and sportswriter Mary Caton.

This year's induction ceremony is on October 28 at the Ciociaro Club. Tickets are $100 each or $900 for a table of ten.

Tickets are available online at www.wecshof.com, Riverside Physiotherapy Clinic at 832 Lauzon Road and Nantais Sports Shop at 1485 Tecumseh Road West after June 1.
