CTF questions subsidies to EV battery plant

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the Federal government to pump the brakes on any more subsidies for large automakers.

Stellantis halted construction of the NextStar Energy Plant in Windsor this week amid continued negotiations with the federal government. A statement from the company said, "the Canadian government has not delivered what was agreed to."

Several reports suggest Stellantis is looking for more in the wake of subsidies available to the company in several jurisdictions in the United States.

But, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is asking the government to not offer any more taxpayer money.

"If it's simply a question of ironing out a deal that's on the books that's one thing, what we're saying is we've given literally tens of billions of dollars to auto giants and it's time to stop doing that and leave the money in the pocket of taxpayers," said Jay Goldberg, Ontario director for CTF.

Both Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens and Premier Doug Ford are calling on the federal government to fulfil its commitment to build an EV battery plant here in Windsor.

The facility was expected to create 2,500 jobs in the region.
