An 11-year-old from Windsor has completed his journey to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Isaac Brogan, a student at Maranatha Christian Academy, tripped on the word "tenrec" in the sixth round of the semifinal phase Wednesday afternoon in National Harbor, Maryland, outside Washington, D.C.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a tenrec as "any of numerous small often spiny mammalian insectivores [family Tenrecidae], chiefly of Madagascar". Isaac was able to inject a little humour upon hearing the word.

Isaac earned his place at the national bee by winning the Windsor-Essex competition, sponsored by Windsor Family Credit Union. He outlasted the other two Canadian competitors, Eleanor Jeavons of Kitchener, and Chuxia Huang of Sydney, Nova Scotia.
The competition began Wednesday with 231 spellers. At the end of competition Wednesday night, 11 remained.
The finals are set for Thursday evening.
