Health unit issues beach warning for Holiday Beach

A different public beach in Windsor-Essex is now under a warning for bacterial contamination.

During its weekly summer beach testing this week, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has issued a beach warning for Holiday Beach in Amherstburg or a "code yellow". Swimming at Holiday Beach is not recommended, though the area itself remains open.

The beach registered an E.coli count of 406, which is higher than provincial standards concerning water that is safe for swimming.

The health unit said elevated bacteria levels in beach water may increase the risk of you getting sick.

"The most common are stomach and intestinal illnesses such as vomiting and diarrhea, along with lung, eye, ear, nose, or throat infections or skin issues," according to the beach water testing page on the health unit's website. "Swallowing contaminated water is the main way you may get sick. Bacteria can also enter the body through the ears, eyes, nose, or through broken skin."

Sandpoint Beach in Windsor, which was under various warnings and closures, is now fully open, along with the other public beaches in the region.
