NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is urging the federal government to implement measures to help families struggling with rising mortgage interest rates.
Singh visited the Riverside neighbourhood of Windsor Wednesday morning to bring his message.
"We need immediate mortgage relief. There are so many measures that can be taken and the federal government is just not doing enough to give people that mortgage relief," said Singh.
Singh said his party will fight to put measures in place.
"There's a lot of countries that are looking at real solutions to give people a bit of a break who are struggling with the cost of a mortgage. We want to see those aggressive steps be taken here in Canada," said Singh. "Steps like Spain is taking to force banks to give lower interest rates to families that are struggling. Like Portugal has put in a subsidy for people that can't pay their mortgage right now. We need to see some aggressive measures put in place to give people some relief, to give people a break so they don't lose their homes."
Windsor Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk said the government has no control over the Bank of Canada.
"What we're trying to do as a government is bring affordability measures to Canadians whether that's affordable child care, whether its the grocery rebate, whether it's the Canada worker benefit, we're trying to put more money in the pockets of Canadians to be able to deal with these ups and downs and these increases in costs that are being driven by increasing interest rates."
Last week, the Bank of Canada raised its key lending rate to 5 per cent, up a quarter-percentage-point from 4.75.
