Windsor Public Library Board Chair Mark McKenzie doesn't want to say fees are gone for good. He prefers to say "indefinitely."
The library put a hold on late fees during the pandemic. During a recent meeting, board members opted to continue the practice, pointing to the experience of other municipal libraries.
McKenzie, who is also a city councillor, said one benefit appears to be late materials come back faster.
He speculates borrowers may have felt embarrassed to come in and pay the fines. McKenzie also expressed regret that overdue fees impacted some users' credit scores.
In the past, users received an email three days before the material was due, the day it was expected back, and each subsequent day it was overdrawn.
McKenzie said the library will start using text messages and phone calls.
Users are not prevented from taking out new materials, even if they have overdue books or videos. McKenzie said that may have to change.
The decision is part of a greater effort to modernize the library.
The library enters contract talks this fall, and McKenzie signalled the board may push for longer hours at library branches.
