Province may open disaster relief program to Kingsville residents

Kingsville residents affected by last month's torrential rain may soon be able to apply for disaster relief assistance from the provincial government.

The Town is working with Queens Park toward a potential opening of Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program for residents affected by damage caused by flooding and high winds during the storms on August 24 and 25.

"Eligibility for the program includes small owner-operated businesses or farms, not-for-profit organizations, homeowners [primary residence only], and residential tenants," read a release from the Town. "If the province activates the program for Kingsville, you can apply for assistance."

There is a limit of $250,000 in aid per application with a $500 deductible, which may be waived for low-income residents. Up to 90 per cent of an applicant's costs are covered, with limits for furnishings, appliances, and emergency expenses.

The provincial program is not meant to replace any homeowner's insurance, with any insurance payments deducted.

Residents who believe they are eligible should fill out the assessment form, which is on the Town's official website. The information gathered will be used to petition the provincial government to open the program for Kingsville. If the Town can do so, applicants will get an email outlining the next steps.
