WRH increasing security measures in emergency departments

Additional security measures have been installed at the emergency departments on both campuses of Windsor Regional Hospital

The hospital has installed new technology at the entrances of both emergency departments to detect the presence of weapons.

The Evolv Technology system uses sensor technology with artificial intelligence to detect weapons like handguns or knives.

"The key to this system is that people who don't need screening can just pass right through, also we can screen multiple people at the same time. We don't have to meter people through one at a time, they don't have to divest," said David Healey with Evolv Technology.

When a person passes through the Evolv Weapons Detection System, video is continually relayed to a monitor with security. If an object of interest is discovered, the machine will alert security and direct them to where to search.

Windsor Regional Hospital CEO David Musyj said the board decided make these additions after four separate incidents involving weapons in the emergency department.

"A hospital is a place to come and be healed and not be concerned about your safety. This is another layer to your safety here at the hospital, we're trying to enhance it for patients and staff," said Musyj.

He indicated the hospital had considered traditional metal detectors in the past but did not want to inhibit access to receiving care.

"Most of us go to sporting events or concerts at various venues and we know what the lines are like with the traditional technology. We can't replicate that or have that happen at a hospital," said Musyj.

Following a review of the technology, the hospital may consider installing it at other entrances of their facilities.
