Windsor residents are invited to a public event to launch a history preservation project in one of the city's most cherished neighbourhoods.
On Monday evening, the Walkerville Heritage Conservation District (HCD) Study will begin with a public meeting at Willistead Manor.
The Ontario Heritage Act defines an HCD as "a geographically defined area within a municipality that is noted for its distinct heritage character. Through the adoption of a plan, guidelines, or policies, a municipality is able to guide future change of the district area."
The study will gather information on Walkerville's history, compile extensive research, take inventory of heritage resources, and define a boundary for the neighbourhood.
The project will begin with staff from the City of Windsor canvassing Walkerville streets, taking photographs and videos of various properties. The public is invited to participate in an online survey.
A draft report will be completed through the fall and winter, and a second public meeting will be held in spring 2024. After that, a final report will be presented to the City Council Heritage Committee and the full City Council.
The kickoff event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Saltmarche Gallery on the second floor of Willistead Manor. A presentation will take place at 7 p.m.
Complete information on the study, as well as participating in the kickoff event, can be found on the City's official website.
