Windsor reveals plan for homeless during extreme cold

With temperatures expected to fall in the coming weeks, the City of Windsor has announced a plan for those experiencing homelessness to get out of the cold.

Starting Friday, the Downtown Mission will open an overnight warming centre and add more beds to its shelter.

The warming centre is open each night from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. throughout the winter months.

Welcome Centre Shelter for Women and Families accepts pets in their shelter. The number for the facility on Tuscarora Street is 519-971-7595.

The Salvation Army on Church Street has a shelter for men. Its phone number is 519-253-7473.

The Homelessness and Housing Help Hub on Wyandotte Street East offers relief from the cold during the day from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The public can access housing, health and justice support, and a place to rest and stay warm. Reach it at 519-253-3806 or 519-254-4824.

For those in Leamington, the Leamington Emergency Shelter Program offers shelter beds for men, women, and families. Call 226-787-8805 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The Leamington Community Hope Centre offers an evening meal and a place to stay warm on Erie Street South every day from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The number is 519-326-9280.

The Essex County Homelessness Hub is on Talbot Street East and is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering housing support, health support, and a place to stay warm and rest. Reach it at 519-326-8629 ext. 395.

If you are concerned about someone experiencing homelessness or sleeping outdoors, call 911. The 311 Call Centre is available seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or use the Windsor311 mobile app to request a response.

The 211 Call Centre and 211Ontario.ca are available for information on other community services and programs for those experiencing homelessness, living alone, coping with life changes, or living on a low income.
