Food hampers handed out for the holidays

Throngs of people lined up outside Adie Knox Arena Tuesday morning to receive one of the 100 holiday food hampers from the UHC – Hub of Opportunities.

The hamper includes turkey, potatoes, carrots and other canned goods to complete holiday meals.

Another 200 turkeys and food hampers will be handed out at the UHC Hub of Opportunities east end location on Thursday.

"300 turkeys is not a lot when you know the need is so great. But we are doing what we can and we're very thankful that we can at least help 300 families," said June Muir, CEO of the UHC-Hub of Opportunities.

Local food banks have seen an increase of people accessing their services in the last year.

There's also been a decrease in food donations as prices at the grocery store rise.

Muir said they've made up for that through community fundraisers.

"We've also gotten a lot of cheques and monetary donations from the community so we have been able to buy what we normally buy so far, but the need is greater," said Muir.

MP Brian Masse and MPP Lisa Gretzky were on hand to help with the food deliveries on Tuesday. MP Irek Kusmierczyk and MPP Andrew Dowie are expected to help with deliveries on Thursday.
