Equipment installation underway at EV battery plant

Construction of the NextStar Energy EV battery plant is on track with 30 per cent of the work complete.

A "topping out" ceremony was held Tuesday at the site to commemorate the last structural steel beam to be raised at the 213 acre site.

The module building , one of two main structures on the site, is now fully enclosed and equipment installation has begun.

Despite over a month delay in construction in the spring, the battery modular production is expected to start in the first half of 2024.

The structural steel on the second building, the cell building , is nearing completion and the building is about 40 per cent enclosed.

“People driving by the facility daily are witnessing this historic building take shape as we near the end of the construction process and prepare to enter the installation process,” said Danies Lee, CEO NextStar Energy. “We will have thousands of skilled experts at the site helping to build a world-class facility that will produce leading-edge lithium-ion battery cells and modules for the next generation of electric vehicles. We are grateful to the nearby businesses and residents for their patience during the construction process.”

Once complete, the facility will be the first large-scale, domestic electric-vehicle battery manufacturing facility in Canada.
