Driver fined after guns seized at Windsor-Detroit Tunnel

One person has been fined after border agents at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel discovered firearms in their vehicle.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said the vehicle the pair was travelling in stopped at the checkpoint at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel on June 4. When officers searched it, they found a handgun and semi-automatic rifle inside.

The pair, from the U.S., were not arrested, but one was fined $2,000. The weapons were seized, and the pair was sent back to Detroit.

According to the CBSA, there are stiff penalties for people who carry firearms over the border and do not declare them properly.

"If you do not declare the firearm or are untruthful, the CBSA may seize it, and you may face criminal charges and-or monetary penalties," read the firearm declaration page on the official CBSA website.

The CBSA says there are explicit criteria when it comes to bringing firearms into Canada. People may bring them under certain circumstances, such as hunting during hunting season, for use in competitions, for repair, for movement in transit on the most direct route possible through Canada, and for protection against wildlife in remote areas.

"The border services officer may verify your declaration," read the webpage. "They must be satisfied that you have a valid reason for bringing firearms into Canada and may check to ensure that you have stored your firearms properly for transportation. The border services officer will also review your documents and may verify that the firearms you have match the ones described on the documents."

Complete information on how to import and export firearms legally can be found on the CBSA website.
