Police cruisers involved in fewer collisions last year

The Windsor Police Service's fleet was involved in fewer incidents last year but repairs still cost the service over $200,000.

Windsor police cruisers and unmarked vehicles were involved in 34 collisions and were damaged in three other incidents.

The number is well below the five-year average of 54 incidents a year.

"It's something we continue to work on and it's an organizational priority that we will continue to work with our front-line supervisors on," said Deputy Chief Jason Crowley.

The decrease has been attributed to a new Safe Arrival program launched by the service in the last two years. The program collects data on driving habits and allows supervisors to provide training to ensure officers respond to calls safely.

Most of the vehicles involved in collisions were repaired but three had to be written off due to severe damage.
