UPDATE: Transit Windsor and union reach tentative deal

Almost 300 members of the Amalgamated Transit Union local 616- Windsor will not be going on strike Monday.

The union and the employer have reached a tentative deal after negotiating for months.

ATU Local 616-Windsor issued its second strike notice on January 29 and met all weekend in an effort to reach a deal

"After months of grueling bargaining with the company seeking considerable concessions to offset and/or recoup costs from federally mandated personal medical leave," the union said in a statement.

According to a news release by the union it believes this new deal reflects what they've been asking for.

"We have been vocal that we were working towards a fair and reasonable collective agreement for our membership, that reflects the current working and health and safety conditions for both workers and passengers, as well as wage increases that are reflective to industry standards," ATU Local 616- Windsor said.

The next step will be presenting the offer to the membership for a ratification vote.

"This agreement was achieved as a direct result of the support and solidarity of our members. We look forward to presenting this tentative agreement at a ratification meeting that is currently being scheduled," the union said.

The union has been without a contract since October 1,2023 and has been in a strike position since December 3,2023.

Buses will be running on the regular schedule.

"It's been a marathon of negotiating to get here but we have a tentative agreement that we can present to City Council and that Local 616 can take to their members," said Acting Commissioner of Infrastructure Services Mark Winterton.

He added the details of the agreement will not be released ahead of council approval and membership ratification.
