A Canadian resident has been charged after U.S. customs officers uncovered a large quantity of drugs.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the discovery was made late Monday night on the Detroit side of the Ambassador Bridge. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents were monitoring inbound traffic when they selected a truck for secondary inspection.
According to the complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit, the driver ignored the agents' request to pull over and continued toward the tollbooths before being stopped.
The paper reported that when agents were unable to make the connection between the seal on the Canadian tractor-trailer and the contents of the manifest, a search was begun with drug-sniffing dogs.
Roughly 290 kilograms of cocaine were packaged in 13 Home Depot boxes, reported the Free Press, with a street value of $8.7-million.
The driver, identified in court papers as Gagandeep Singh, is an Indian national living in Canada. He is accused of attempted possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.
The charge has not been proven in court.
