The Municipality of Leamington has asked residents to pay closer attention to where and how they throw out their garbage.
The community reported an increase in reports of people placing garbage curbside outside of normal collection hours, which not only is a violation of bylaws but has an impact on cleanliness.
According to the Municipality's Waste Management Bylaw, residents should consider the following.
Garbage should be placed between 10 p.m. the night before collection day, and 6 a.m. on collection day. Limiting placement during this period reduces the risk of creating messy conditions and the attraction of pests.
Garbage should only be placed in approved containers, and no more than four bags per container. Containers should weigh no more than 20 kilograms.
A maximum of two large items, which include box springs, mattresses, couches, chairs, toilets, and so on, can be placed curbside on collection day. White goods, though, require special arrangements with the Municipality for pickup.
Do not place garbage in a manner that will obstruct pedestrians or vehicles.
Once garbage is collected, containers should be removed from the curb promptly.
The Municipality said violations of these bylaws may result in fines or a $500 clean-up charge.
Complete information on garbage pickup can be found on Leamington's official website.
