Windsor police warn of new, dangerous drug

Windsor police say there is a new, dangerous drug making the rounds.

Investigators say that a new drug, known as medetomidine or dexmedetomidine, was recently found in Toronto's undetected drug market. This has meant an increase in drug overdoses across Ontario.

"This rapid spike in drug toxicity is something of which the public should be aware," noted police on their X, formerly Twitter, account.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), medetomidine or dexmedetomidine is typically used as a surgical anesthetic and analgesic.

Windsor police have also passed along information from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, to remind people of what to do should they come across someone suffering an overdose.
