The crew of a submarine named after the City of Windsor is enjoying a visit to its namesake city this weekend.
The crew of His Majesty's Canadian Submarine (HMCS) Windsor arrived in Windsor earlier this weekend and has been enjoying a schedule of activities during their visit.
According to a release from the Department of Natural Defence, four members of the crew were due to spend Saturday with members from Windsor’s local reserve unit, the HMCS Hunter.
The crew members are the Windsor's commanding officer, Lieutenant-Commander Harrison Nguyen-Huynh, Lieutenant (Navy) Bradley Virgin, the sonar officer; Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class George Smith, the coxswain; and Sailor 1st Class Brandon Trask, the sonar operator.
On Sunday, the crew is scheduled to meet with Mayor Drew Dilkens, and visit local military and naval monuments. They will also meet with the Windsor Spitfires before their St. Patrick's Day matinee against the London Knights.
The HMCS Windsor was first acquired from the British Royal Navy in 2001 after the Royal Navy went to an all-nuclear submarine fleet. The Windsor is a long-range attack submarine and part of the Royal Canadian Navy's Victoria class.
