Those living near the E.C. Row Expressway and Banwell Road may lose some sleep this spring when road reconstruction starts.
The City of Windsor plans to reconstruct the expressway between Lauzon Parkway and Banwell starting on May 6, depending on the tendering process.
City councillors approved an exemption to the noise bylaw to allow the work to continue overnight. However, Ward 7 Councillor Angelo Marignani said it's not just the noise that could keep residents up.
"The sound isn't so much the issue. It's the lighting," said Marignani. "If its facing the north, it hits the households in the Forest Glade Area, especially on Deerbrook."
He asked the administration if the contractor could redirect the lights north during the work.
Commissioner of Infrastructure Services Mark Winterton said the city could ask the contractor to direct the light south.
Marignani said he received numerous complaints about bright light at night during construction on the NextStar battery plant, more so than the sound of pile driving.
Although the city has planned to rehabilitate that stretch of the expressway for years, the push is on to get it done now ahead of the opening of the NextStar plant.
Last week, Premier Doug Ford announced $50-milllion to build a new interchange at the E.C. Row and Banwell. The total cost of the project could be $85-million. Construction could start this fall and take two years.
The road rehabilitation project could take about five weeks.
