Windsor Express, YQGgreen celebrate Earth Hour on Friday

When the Windsor Express tip-off against the London Lightning on Friday night, they'll help local community organizations and raise awareness of our impact on our planet.

YQGgreen plans to stuff a bus with non-perishable food, hygiene products, pet food, and clothing donations at the WFCU Centre.

"We have a great community, and many businesses and organizations are taking small steps that lead to big changes," Founder Elizabeth Elias-Hernandez said.

Before and during the game, booths will display ways residents can make their homes and businesses more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible.

"We hope hundreds of basketball and conservation enthusiasts will come out to support the incredible Windsor Express players and learn a bit more about how everyone can have a positive impact," said Director of Communications and Outreach for the Essex Region Conservation Authority Danielle Breault Stuebing.

Earth Hour is actually on Saturday from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

WWF-Canada hopes this year's event will be the biggest yet. It started as a symbolic moment in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, where people around the world turned off their lights, but President and CEO Megan Leslie said it's become much more than that.

"Every year, we're witnessing wildfires, floods, and other devastating impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss," she said. "It can feel overwhelming, but we still have time to reverse the path we're on. Earth Hour is a yearly reminder that, across our society here in Canada and the world's borders, we can work together to make a difference for our shared home."

This year, communities in 190 countries are taking part.

The game starts at 7 p.m.
