OPP patrolling roads for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is patrolling roads more until May 5, monitoring for safe operation of and around motorcycles.

"Part of that is ensuring motorcycle operators are wearing proper helmets and they're fastened properly, as well as speeding and sober operation," said Constable Craig Soldan. "Any motorcycle operators can expect to be pulled over and have their machine checked, as well as provide a sample of their breath to make sure they comply with the blood alcohol content limits."

A proper license will also be on the list of checks. For drivers of other vehicles, Soldan warned to keep an eye out.

"Sometimes you have to give them a little more space," he said. "Try to make eye contact with motorcycle operators. Sometimes a motorcycle or pedestrian could get lost in the blind spot of your vehicle. Take an extra second or two just to make sure that when you're pulling from an intersection, there isn't a motorcycle operator in that blind spot."

Soldan reiterated that if a motorcyclist gets hit, it can turn into a potentially fatal situation.

"We don't want any injuries and we certainly don't want any fatalities in our roadways," he said. "This is all about being safe and being courteous to one another."
