Construction continues at John R. Park Homestead this summer.
Extensive restoration of the nearly 200-year-old building began in the fall of 2023.
The restoration team began by installing sister joists to repair the roof. The work was successful and the roof was raised nearly 12 inches in some areas.
There was also plaster work completed and windows repaired over the winter months.
Crews are now concentrating on the exterior siding and finishing coats of plaster and lime wash inside the home.
After receiving provincial permit approvals, contractors are also excavating and waterproofing the south side of the home and replacing the lakeside porch.
"This once-in-a-lifetime restoration began following a comprehensive heritage architect’s investigation and detailed report identifying works that needed to be undertaken to ensure the historic home’s long-term sustainability,” said Kevin Money, ERCA’s Director of Conservation Services.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority Foundation is still trying to raise an additional $500,000 to complete the work at the home.
"The additional funds will be used to address foundation issues on the home’s north side, and to restore the structural integrity of the horse barn and other buildings, to complete the restoration to the highest standards,” said Money.
The home is expected to stay closed until the fall.
