Dowie introduces bill to create provincial urban parks

Inspired by the efforts going into creating the Ojibway National Urban Park, Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie wants to do the same at the provincial level.

Dowie introduced a bill at Queen's Park on Thursday that would create a new classification of provincial parks.

It goes for a second reading on May 29th.

If the legislation passes, it'll support the proposed Uxbridge Urban Provincial Park and create opportunities for future urban provincial parks.

"Bill 193 was inspired by Windsor's legacy of protecting the Ojibway Prairie Complex that gave a home for provincially significant natural spaces in our urban footprint," said Dowie. "There is an incredible opportunity to realize the vision of our provincial parks system by including the natural environment and potential recreational opportunities close to our urban areas."

The new classification would be the first time the province protected significant biodiversity and nature-based recreation services within or near large urban areas.
