Transit Windsor is moving forward with $117 million of improvements thanks to some provincial and federal funding.
The federal government is investing $45,527,116 through the Canada Infrastructure Program and the provincial government is contributing $37,935,470.
The money will go toward the completion of 10 transit projects.
"The primary ones are a facility expansion [at the Transit Windsor Garage], so expansion and modernization of the bus storage and also modernization of the garage side, the repair side in terms of body shop, hoists and process equipment and obviously the purchase of new vehicles," said Tyson Cragg, Executive Director of Transit Windsor.
Transit Windsor will purchase 34 hybrid electric buses and 25 diesel buses.
There will also be funding directed to improvements of the west-end terminal and the relocation of the east-end terminal.
"A lot of our expansion plans are dependent on storage capacity and also terminal capacity so with the expansion of the east-end and west-end terminals, in fact, the relocation of a brand new east-end terminal, that helps us to further our Masterplan initiatives," said Cragg.
The City of Windsor is contributing $34,315,651 to the projects. All the projects have been allocated funding in the 10-year capital budget approved by Windsor City Council this year.
Cragg said the funding allows them to move some of those projects forward.
