Kingsville to consider buying one or more school properties

The Town of Kingsville is mulling over whether to buy one or more school properties that will come up for grabs when the new Erie Migration District School opens in September.

The new school will replace Kingsville District High School, Kingsville Public School, and Jack Miner Public School.

The town wants to know what residents think, so it's hosting a public information session on July 29. The meeting, at the Grovedale Arts and Culture Centre, starts at 6 p.m.

Town staff will make a presentation and provide options for resident consideration. They'll present information about the provincial legislative process determining how school properties are sold and weigh the pros and cons of buying the land.

Those who can't attend the meeting can watch the livestream on the town's website.

"This is one of our community's biggest decisions, and we hope to see a huge turnout both in person and online to determine whether there is public appetite for purchasing and redeveloping these properties," said Mayor Dennis Rogers.

Kingsville will also gather public input through its citizen engagement portal, HaveYourSayKingsville.ca. The portal opens on July 30 and closes at the end of August.

"Council identified the future use of the closed school properties as a priority, and town administration has been working diligently on it," said CAO John Norton.

Town councillors will get a report on their options this fall.
