The City of Windsor is celebrating the completion of another portion of work on a major east-west artery.
Mayor Drew Dilkens and other officials announced on Tuesday morning the completion of the fourth phase of the Cabana Road project. With $45-million spent, Cabana Road West between Highway 3 and Provincial Road is four lanes wide.
"Today we celebrate the completion of construction on Cabana Road West from Provincial Road to Highway 3, a key milestone in our commitment to building Windsor’s future," said Dilkens. "It is critically important that we continue to invest in Windsor’s record economic growth and make it translate to more jobs and more opportunities for all residents."
The mayor added that the widening of this vital artery will support major infrastructure projects.
"This vital east-west transportation corridor in South Windsor will provide a direct link with a new acute care hospital as well as new employment and residential development off Country Road 42," said Dilkens.
Work began in 2017 on the section between Provincial Road and Howard Avenue. The portion between Howard and Dougall Avenue started in 2019. The third phase, from Dougall to Dominion Boulevard, commenced in 2021. The just-completed fourth part began last spring and involved the area between Dominion and Highway 3.
One more project phase is still to come, Cabana Road East/Division Road between Provincial and Walker. That phase is in the detail design mode. Property acquisition and utility shifting will happen later this year. The work is set to begin in spring 2025, pending budgetary approval.
The reconstruction includes a new sidewalk separated from motor vehicle traffic by a half-metre painted buffer zone in each direction. The work also involves enhanced boulevard restoration with sodding and tree planting.
