Windsor police have welcomed the addition of two new Police Service Dogs (PSD), and sent a third to a comfortable retirement.
Ghost, a 17-month-old German shepherd, and Link, a 19-month-old Belgian Malinois, were introduced as the newest members of the K-9 Unit, at an event on Wednesday afternoon.
Both dogs were promoted after completing an intensive 15-week training course.
"The arduous training program has equipped these canines with essential skills to apprehend suspects, search for missing people, detect illegal narcotics and explosives, and help keep their handlers and the public safe in high-risk situations," read a release from Windsor police.
Ghost has been partnered with Constable Ken Meloche. Link will work with Constable Garret Crichton.
Ghost will succeed PSD Hasko, retiring after eight years of service.
"We are excited to welcome Ghost and Link to our K9 Unit. These dogs and their handlers demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication throughout their training, and we look forward to seeing their positive impact on our community," said Windsor police Inspector Robert Wilson. "We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Hasko for his many years of service and wish him a very happy retirement."
The K-9 Unit is part of Windsor police's Emergency Services Branch.
