Property purchased for new downtown fire station

The City of Windsor and Windsor Fire and Rescue Services are preparing for a big move.

The city has purchased property on the corner of Giles Boulevard and Goyeau Street to rebuild Station 1, two blocks from the current building.

"We had the money to purchase property, now we're at the tail end of the 10-year capital plan we're stating to amass funds for the build," said Fire Chief Stephen Laforet. "We're just at the very beginning of this project and it's going to be several years before we see a shovel in the ground."

Laforet said they have been evaluating the need for a new Station 1 for several years as the current building is over 55 years old.

"Because of its age and the mechanical systems in it it's becoming costly to repair. But also tied to the reasons for moving is we've outgrown the space and we have no opportunities to expand it," said Laforet.

He said when the property became available they decided it was the right move.

"There's not going to be an effect on our response times, it's the right size, we have accessibility so we'll be able to drive in with the vehicles and then drive out," said Laforet.
