United Way helping families stay connected with recent donation

Connecting Windsor Essex donated 56 iPads to families in United Way Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent's priority neighbourhoods.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Way's Community Action Network discovered a digital disparity among participating families. Over 50 per cent did not have access to reliable internet or a device so they could participate in virtual meetings.

The United Way contacted Connecting Windsor Essex, a non-profit organization focused on connectivity and cyber security, for help. The organization purchased the iPads, distributed them to families in need, and became a part of the team creating strategies to keep more people in the community connected.

“Being a part of helping people in the Windsor-Essex region build the future is a key priority for Connecting Windsor Essex”, said Joanne Soave, Chief Executive Officer of Connecting Windsor-Essex. “That is why we are delighted to support the ProsperUs initiative, both through this contribution and through our presence on the ProsperUs Executive Leadership Roundtable. With a firm commitment to bridging the digital divide, we're taking strides to ensure that every member of our community has access to the tools, resources, and knowledge needed to thrive.”

The United Way identified West Windsor, Downtown Windsor, and Leamington as areas with the greatest barriers to opportunity for youth. The iPads were distributed in these neighbourhoods to help bridge the gap.

“Empowering our community through digital inclusion is a vital step towards a more equitable future,” said Jessica Sartori, Co-Chair of ProsperUs Leadership Council. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Connecting Windsor-Essex to address these critical needs. By providing access to essential technology, we are not only helping to bridge the digital divide, but also reinforcing our commitment to creating opportunities for children, youth, and their families in Windsor-Essex County. Together, we can build a more connected and inclusive community for all.”
