Health unit issues update on algal bloom in Lake St. Clair

The health unit warns residents living near an algae bloom in Lake St. Clair to pick up some bottled water if they rely on well water.

The bloom appeared last month near Stoney Point. The health unit tested the water earlier this month for toxicity and found it was within acceptable levels. On Friday, it tested the water again and discovered it exceeded limits.

However, the health unit continues to tell residents who rely on water from a well to avoid drinking, cooking, or making baby formula with it.

"Do not boil this well water," advised the health unit. "This may increase the toxicity in the water."

For those on the municipal water system, tap water is safe for food preparation and drinking. It's tested regularly for contaminants, including blue-green algae and associated toxins.

Earlier, Medical Officer of Health Doctor Mehdi Aloosh warned residents that wind and water conditions could move the algae bloom to where it could contaminate drinking water sources and beaches.

"Residents and visitors are urged to take a cautious approach and protect themselves, their children, and their pets from potential health risks," he said.

The health unit has also asked those living on Lake St. Clair to stay out of water that appears cloudy or "scummy."
