Teen from Windsor dead after fall from cliff in B.C.

Authorities in British Columbia have confirmed that a 17-year-old from Windsor is dead following a fall over the weekend.

It happened Sunday afternoon at Lynn Canyon Park in North Vancouver, according to the District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services.

Assistant Chief Dwayne Derban told WindsorNewsToday.ca that first responders responded to a call shortly before 3 p.m. Pacific Time.

"We sent out a couple of search teams to walk down each side of the river, and pretty soon, we noticed the person lying at the bottom of the cliff on the east side of the river," said Derban.

The boy was hiking with a group of friends when authorities say he separated from the group, crossed a fence, and ran into trouble while trying to take photos. The fall was about 50 metres.

Derban said the area is very popular with adventure seekers and nature lovers, and firefighters have seen plenty of activity there.

"It's a bit of a local playground, you could say, but not without its dangers," said Derban. "So we get a fair number of calls, often water rescues or rescues from pools."

The victim's family has been notified of the accident, but his name has not been publicly released.

"When I got there, I liaised with a group of three young men. They were from Windsor as well," said Derban. "According to them, he was enrolled at UBC (University of British Columbia) and decided to start school in September there."

The area has reported dozens of deaths in the last three decades.
