Experiencing a hate crime can be traumatic, and Windsor police now have a tool to make the process of reporting it easier.
Windsor police have announced a new online tool for reporting hate crimes.
The new tool has signified a desire by police to be made aware of both hate crimes and hate-motivated incidents.
"A hate crime is defined as a criminal violation motivated by hate, based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other similar factor," read the Windsor police's webpage."
An example would include the spray-painting of a swastika and hateful messages on the side of a building.
"A hate-motivated incident may be motivated by the same factors as a hate crime but does not reach the threshold of a criminal offence. These incidents may include name calling, racial insults, or the distribution of material containing hateful language," read the webpage.
Police say examples include the use of racial or homophobic slurs and taunts such as "Go back to your country".
Windsor police say if you are a victim, remain calm, record and keep any relevant information, and either call them or use the online tool.
Investigators will take the information and work closely with the victim, explaining the process and referring them to agencies who may help further.
In emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call dispatch at (519) 258-6111, and anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
