Ontario's law enforcement oversight agency has provided details on a fatal downtown Windsor shooting.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed to WindsorNewsToday.ca on Monday afternoon that two Windsor police officers fired their weapons in the incident on Friday morning that left a 57-year-old man dead.
"The SIU can confirm two officers discharged their firearms," said SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette. "Two subject officials and four witness officials have been designated at this time."
Police were called around 10:30 a.m. on Friday to the area of Goyeau Street and Elliott Street for reports of a man with a weapon.
The man was shot by police during the ensuing confrontation.
"When officers arrived on scene, they did encounter a male who had a weapon, and at that time, the suspect was confronted, and, subsequently, he sustained gunshot wounds," said Windsor Police Constable Bianca Jackson.
The SIU also reported that the post-mortem was performed on the deceased over the weekend.
No additional details are being released as the incident is still being investigated.
