A man has died after being shot by a Windsor police officer in downtown Windsor Friday morning.
Around 10:30 a.m., police were called to the area of Goyeau Street and Elliott Street for reports of a man with a weapon.
Few details have been released, however the man was shot by a police officer during the ensuing confrontation.
"When officers arrived on scene they did encounter a male who had a weapon and at that time the suspect was confronted and subsequently he sustained gunshot wounds," said Windsor Police Constable Bianca Jackson.
The province's police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, has invoked its mandate and will oversee the investigation.
The SIU confirmed the 57-year-old man died from his injuries.
Goyeau Street is closed between Tuscarora Street and Erie Street East, while Elliott Street is shut down from Windsor Avenue to Dufferin Place while the investigation continues.
The public is being asked to avoid the area.
An officer also sustained minor injuries during the altercation.
No one else was injured.
