Some 270,000 people entered Canada via GHIB in August

The Gordie Howe International Bridge (GHIB) was a popular entry into Canada during its first full month of public access.

Statistics Canada provided border-crossing data on Friday for August, and the new crossing between Windsor and Detroit was a hit, with about 270,000 people using the GHIB to enter Canada.

"In August, the Gordie Howe International Bridge was used for 134,900 Canadian-resident return trips from the United States by automobile, 56.7 per cent of which were same-day," according to Statistics Canada.

For American residents, there were 101,000 using the bridge to enter Canada, with 52.2 per cent same-day.

In contrast to those using the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, there was a total of 348,000 Canadian and U.S. residents using both. This represented a 35.4 per cent decline in traffic at those two crossings from August 2025.

Commercial traffic at the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor-Detroit Tunnel was relatively stable from August of last year, increasing by 0.4 per cent to a total of 87,400.

At the GHIB, 34,800 commercial trucks entered Canada.
