Windsor Police expanding in-cruiser camera and body-worn microphone pilot project

More Windsor Police officers will have in-cruiser cameras and body-worn microphones soon.

A three-month pilot project, which equipped 26 officers, wrapped up last month.

Windsor Police announced it's launch back in May.

Police call it a success and plan to expand the pilot project to equip frontline supervisors with the technology. Next year, all patrol officers will have in-cruiser cameras and body-worn microphones.

"Our three-month pilot project showed the true value of these devices," said Deputy Chief of Operational Support Karel DeGraaf. "Equipping frontline officers with cameras and microphones supports our mission of serving the community with professionalism, accountability, and integrity."

The cameras and microphones not only help collect evidence but add an additional layer of transparency and accountability to police operations.

The cameras offer Automatic License Plate Recognition Technology, scanning nearby plates for stolen vehicles and other infractions.

Officers will tell members of the public if the devices are active, and the collection, retention, use, and disclosure of personal information collected by cameras and microphones will comply with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
