Windsor police stress motorcycle safety as riding season roars

The weather is now warmer, and that means motorcycle aficionados will be cranking it up on the streets.

The privilege of riding, though, comes with responsibility, and Windsor police have reminded riders of ways to keep themselves and others on the road safe.

The OPP has already asked motorcyclists to be mindful of the roads, and Windsor police have followed suit.

"As warmer weather brings more motorcycles onto the roads, we want to remind everyone to drive safely and stay alert," read a tweet from Windsor police. "Whether you are on two wheels or four, let’s all do our part to make our roads safer for everyone."

Police say the proper gear is a must for riders, complete with helmets, a jacket, pants, boots with nonskid soles, and gloves. Reflective clothing or tape also helps others easily see you.

Riders are also urged to ride defensively and not in a driver's blind spot.

Drivers also have responsibilities. They should give riders extra space whenever possible, frequently check blind spots and mirrors before changing lanes, and be extra cautious when seeing a rider with their turn signal on.

The OPP say 57 motorcyclists were killed on patrolled highways across Ontario in 2024, the highest total in two decades.
