The Town of Essex has offered residents a sweetened opportunity to protect their homes from basement flooding.
Residents are now offered increased incentives for the Town's flood prevention subsidies. Owners of single-family and duplex homes may apply to receive a financial subsidy to disconnect downspouts, complete investigative camera work, install a sump pump and/or backwater valve, or purchase a rain barrel.
"As a municipality, we are committed to preparing for the effects of climate change," said Mayor Sherry Bondy. "We are pleased to offer financial support through the subsidy program to assist residents in reducing the risk of flooding on their property."
For 2024, subsidies are offered as follows.
Installing backwater valves - Up to 100 per cent of the cost ($1000 maximum).
Installing a sump pump (including sump pit) to disconnect foundation drains from floor drains - Up to 100 per cent of cost ($1750 maximum).
Investigative pipe camera work - Up to 100 per cent of cost ($400 maximum).
Downspout disconnection - Up to 100 per cent of cost ($75 maximum).
Rain barrel subsidy - Up to 100 per cent of cost ($100 maximum).
Sump pump overflow - Up to 100 per cent of cost ($300 maximum).
The program is open to Essex residents who do not owe overdue payments or back taxes.
